Cairns was put on the world map on 25 September 1966 when Captain George Branford and his deckhand Richard Obach, landed a 1,065lb Black Marlin - The first ever “Grander” caught in Australian waters. The fish also set a new world record and first marlin over 1,000 lb to be caught on 80lb rod and reel tackle.
2026 marks the 60th anniversary of the catch that cemented Cairns and the Great Barrier Reefs reputation as the worlds premier destination for Giant black marlin fishing.
